Book One Good Earl Deserves a Lover: The Second Rule of Scoundrels (Rules of Scoundrels Book 2) Review :

This has to be one of the absolute worst books I have ever read, and I read a LOT. The prologue was decent, but then it quickly went downhill from there. I got this book expecting a charming, maybe funny, historical romance where a quirky heroine is introduced by a rake to the finer points of what love/pleasure can be; what I got was the urge to throttle the heroine on virtually every page. Pippa is supposed to be smart, but everything she does and says is so ridiculously idiotic that I felt my brain curdle every time she opened her mouth. She constantly does nonsensical things: why would she grab a stranger's hair from a balcony in the dark when she doesn't even know who it is? why would she not try to hide when she's almost seen outside the gambling club, when she knows it would negatively affect her and her family's reputation? I'm sorry but that's not "scientific curiosity", that's stupidity. She's supposed to be into anatomy, and yet only knows a very basic couple of bone names. She's supposed to be into horticulture and (I guess?) discovers grafting, but grafting of plants has been around since the ancient civilizations and would not change the colors of the flower, so I'm not even sure what's going on there. It seems like the author was lazy in doing any research whatsoever about the topics the heroine was supposed to be fanatical about, and just tossed in a few random Latin names because...that's science to her I guess? I think a lot of reviewers here just accept that because the author calls Pippa "scientific" and "brilliant" that she actually is, when there is nothing about her character at all to support those statements, and she just comes across like an irritating toddler who can't keep its fingers out of the electrical socket. The hero was all right I suppose, though I could not wrap my head around as to why he would possibly be attracted to someone like Pippa. I stopped reading halfway through the book as I could not make myself slog through this mess of a book.To conclude...Liked: The editor used spellcheck and the cover is decent, as is the prologue.Did not like: Literally every thing else about this ludicrous story.
My biggest problem with this book is the premise that a really smart woman who values honesty above all else would go to someone other than her fiancĂ© to “research” love making - to me that was cheating and I don’t see pippa as capable of being that naive/intentionally blind/ cruel to her fiancĂ©. To some extent I could understand pippa’s attraction to cross since he was the only person she felt understood, accepted and truly valued by but I didn’t understand cross’ attraction to her. In the end I found myself feeling pretty bad for castleton - he seemed like a genuinely kind, nice man and the rushed let’s pair Meghan and castleton together just so people don’t feel bad for the support characters didn’t work. Castleton deserved better than that.
